Even though GLOW was overlooked for any recognition at this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards (damned youths), stars Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin brought the eleganza for the ceremony’s red carpet on Saturday night.
Alison, who was a presenter during the ceremony, wore a black patterned bodysuit and sheer skirt combo from designer Sandy Liang. It looked like something her GLOW character, Zoya the Destroya, would wear at a wrestling gala. I’m not a huge fan of the look, but I adore her platform shoes with a heel that looks like stacked balls. For an actress playing a female wrestler, I think “stacked balls” is definitely an appropriate wardrobe choice. Alison incorporated a retro vibe to her look with a high ponytail and the one-two punch of pink lip gloss and “beginner blue” eye shadow (please let me not be the only person here who didn’t try rocking that look in the 80s).
Alison’s GLOW co-star, Betty Gilpin, sported a menswear-inspired Zac Posen suit, complete with matching pumps. She wore her hair pulled back into a bun, showcasing her smoky eyes and nude lips. Betty is also a beautiful woman and, although I’m not sold on the hair and makeup, I love the suit. I could get deep and say it’s the perfect representation of her character on the show, attempting to make her mark in a male-dominated field, but I really just think it’s a sexy suit, and it looks great on her.
Another overlooked actress for a nomination, Mandy Moore, showed up in a short, silver dress by Alberta Ferretti. When I saw this, all I could think was, “Oh, Mandy,” which made me think of the Barry Manilow song, which isn’t nearly as painful as this dress looks. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mandy, but this dress is a definite boot. It does absolutely nothing for her lovely figure. It’s too short and I don’t know what it’s doing to her boobs, but it’s not good. I like the sparkly stones on the shoulders and along the neckline, but it just needs to be longer, belted, or something. As much as I’m not a fan of the dress, she did everything to complement it right, such as the slicked back hair, long drop earrings, black clutch and strappy stilettos. I like the sci-fi vibe, but she should not have said yes to that dress. It makes me want to cry almost as much as watching an episode of This is Us does.
She may have been nominated for Best Villain (for her portrayal of Lenny Busker on the FX series Legion), but Aubrey Plaza looked positively angelic on the red carpet in a long sleeved cream-hued mini-dress decorated with beaded gold bows by designer Elisabetta Franchi. Everything about this look is on point, from her subtle makeup and side-swept, wavy hair to her metallic Jimmy Choo pumps. The Parks and Rec alum also sported Alexis Bittar earrings and Eva Fehren rings. If only I had decent looking legs, I would be searching out a knock-off of this dress right this minute. Brava, Aurey. And, being the sole female nominee in this category, here’s hopes that you take home a Moonman tonight.
